(1) PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
------------------------
MSCODE.exe is a complete menu driven "MORSE CODE MADE EASY" learning
tool that allows you to set the pace. The 3 major modes are LESSONS,
PRACTICE and WORD LIST. You can switch between internal speaker and
sound card, change the tone, number of words per minute, how many
characters are sent at a time and weather or not the characters are
displayed as they are sent. The program tracks your progress and
displays a score based on level of difficulty at the end of each
lesson.
"Use Ctrl key as telegraph key" and "Send text file" are reserved
options for the registered version.
For a more complete program description see (13) PROGRAM MENU OPTIONS.
(2) DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE:
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying
it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected
to register. Individual programs differ on details -- some request
registration while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period.
With registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using
the software to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as
stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both
cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in
the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to
copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written permission
before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is
low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee
-- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
(3) DISCLAIMER:
D I S C L A I M E R - A G R E E M E N T
Users of MsCode must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
"MsCode is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties,
expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties
of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes
no liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result
from the use of MsCode."
MsCode is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the
user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but
please do not give it away altered or as part of another system. The
essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide
incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. If
you find this program useful and find that you are using MsCode and
continue to use MsCode after a reasonable trial period, you must make
a registration payment of $25 plus s/h and any sales tax that may apply,
to Brad's Software. The $25 registration fee will license one copy for
use on any one computer at any one time. You must treat this software
just like a book. An example is that this software may be used by any
number of people and may be freely moved from one computer location to
another, so long as there is no possibility of it being used at one
location while it's being used at another. Just as a book cannot be
read by two different persons at the same time.
Commercial users of MsCode must register and pay for their copies of
MsCode within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.
Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting Brad's Software.
You are encouraged to pass a copy of MsCode along to your friends for
evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they find
that they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of the
latest version of the MsCode software.
(4) LICENSE:
MSCODE is not and has never been public domain, nor is it free ware.
MSCODE is copyrighted by Ken Bradford and any unauthorized use
inconsistent with the terms of this license is an infringement of
the copyright.
MSCODE may be used without registration for 30 days for evaluation.
The use of MSCODE beyond the 30 days, requires registration.
See (14) REGISTRATION for registering the MSCODE software.
The use of unlicensed copies by any person, business, corporation,
government agency or any other entity is strictly prohibited. After
the 30 day evaluation period, you must either register the software
or remove it.
A single user license permits a user to use MSCODE only on a single
computer. A purchaser of a single user license may use the program on
different computers, but may not use the program on more than one
computer at a time.
Registration to a business name requires a SITE license.
Write, call or email Brad's Software for site fees.
See Order.txt (ORDER FORM).
SPECIAL OFFER TO TEACHERS:
Teachers in the public schools who register MsCode can share their
registered copy with students in their immediate class room and are not
required to have a site license.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
No one may modify or patch the MSCODE executable files in any way,
including but not limited to decompiling, disassembling, or otherwise
reverse engineering the program.
A limited license is granted to copy and distribute MSCODE only for
the purpose of evaluation by others, subject to the above limitations,
and also the following:
MSCODE must be copied in unmodified form, complete with all accompanying
files, documentation, and this license.
(5) PACKING LIST:
-----------------
MSCODE.ZIP ( might also be listed as MCMExx.ZIP ect. )
Compressed ZIP file of the following files.
FILE_ID.DIZ Program description file.
MSCODE.DOC This documentation file.
ORDER.TXT Order form to register MsCode.
MSCODE.HLP Help file (tells how to use MsCode).
MSCODE.TBL International Morse Code table with notes.
SETUP.EXE Setup program to load MsCode files into Windows.
SETUP.LST Required by Windows to setup MsCode.
Files #400.wav to #1300.wav required for PRCACTICE KEY to work
with sound card.
Files with a underline as the last letter have been compressed
by the Windows packaging utility and will be decompressed when
you run the SETUP.EXE file.
The reason that there are two copies of FILE_ID.DIZ and MSCODE.DOC
(one compressed and one that is not compressed) is that some BBS's
will not load a ZIP file if their software can't find the DIZ file.
Most people will not load a program if they can't read the
documentation file first which is a good practice.
(6) DISTRIBUTION:
-------------------
You are welcome to give unaltered copies of MSCODE.ZIP to
your friends or upload it to your favorite bulletin board.
MSCODE may not be distributed in conjunction with any
other product without a specific license to do so from
Ken Bradford, with exception that Vendors may distribute
the latest evaluation copy of MsCode's zip file on CD-ROM
provided that all files, including this documentation file
are intact. VENDORS AND DISTRIBUTERS MUST NOT ADD THEIR
OWN ADVERTISING TO THE ZIP FILE.
No fee, charge, or other compensation may be charged except
as listed below:
A. Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
may make MSCODE available for downloading only as long as
the above conditions are met. Overall charges are permitted
as long as there is no specific charge for downloading
MSCODE. Any fee divided by the number of items downloaded
must not exceed ten dollars.
B. Vendors of user-supported or shareware may distribute
only the most current shareware version of MSCODE without
specific permission, subject to the above conditions. It is
the responsibility of the vendor to obtain the most recent
shareware version. Vendors may charge a disk duplication
and handling fee. The fee divided by the number of programs
on the disk may not exceed ten dollars. CD-ROM disks will
not be restricted to the $10 limit.

(8) EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
-----------------------
IBM PC and most compatibles. Windows 3.1 or higher, color monitor,
mouse and hard drive are required.
(9) PROGRAM HISTORY:
--------------------
I am one of those people that can't remember the previous characters
sent. Way back in October of 1984,I developed a program for my own
personal use that ran on the TI 99/4A home computer. The program allowed
me to select and hear the characters sent as words. It became easy to
learn once I quit listening for individual dits and da's.
In 1986 I rewrote "MORSE CODE MADE EASY" to run on a TI PC. It had a TI
three color plain graphics board and was updated for IBM with a Hercules
CGA card. I still hadn't added the shareware screens or published MsCode
even then because there weren't that many TI PC's around and they were
switching to IBM motherboards . I bought a new 486/66 IBM compatible in
February 1993, started Brad's SoftWare and have been publishing some of
the software that I have written over the years. Since that time I have
upgraded to faster machines with more memory and hard drive.
Other software packages available by Brad's Software is "Texlotto", and
"TexCash5" which are complete Texas Lottery Data Analyzers, now
available in both DOS and Windows versions.
(10) REVISIONS:
--------------
VERSION 6.0 CHANGES:
--------------------
01/03/96 Rewritten for Windows from the DOS version.
VERSION 6.1 CHANGES:
--------------------
05/21/96 Registration available through CompuServe required
documentation changes. No longer available after 12/31/98.
VERSION 6.2 CHANGES:
--------------------
07/27/96 Corrected Windows 95 loading problem.
Added "PRACTICE KEY" to the registered version, that allows you to use
the Ctrl key as a telegraph key that not only sounds out the dits and
dahs, but displays them and the characters that they represent.
Added "SEND TEXT FILE" to the registered version, that allows you to
load a text file and sound out in MORSE CODE any part of the text file
that you have hi-lighted.
VERSION 6.3 CHANGES:
--------------------
02/04/98 Added SOUND control on toolbar and associated files that allow
you to switch between internal speaker and sound card.
VERSION 6.3.1 CHANGES:
--------------------
11/20/98 Eliminated need for seperate versions for Windows. Now setup
will load MsCode for Windows NT, 3.1. and 9x.
(11) INSTALLATION:
-----------------
FROM FLOPPY:
Insert the disk into a floppy drive. In Windows File Manager, select
File/Run and type d:\setup (replace the "d" with the drive letter).
FROM A DIRECTORY:
If the files are compressed into a zip file, you must decompress
the file using WINZIP, PKZIP or some other de-compressing utility
first.
In Windows File Manager, select File/Run and type d:\TEMP\setup
(replace the "d" with the drive letter and replace TEMP with the
directory that holds the files).
You will be asked which drive to install MsCode to with C:\MSCODE as
the default. If you have the DOS version of MsCode and want to keep
it, you should rename one of their directories, otherwise the Windows
version will overwrite the DOS version.
The data file "SCORES" from the DOS version will not display correctly
in the Windows version and you will need to restart storing your scores
if you have been running MsCode for DOS.
------------------------------ HELP FILES -------------------------------
You can run the MsCode help files by clicking it's icon in the Windows
Mscode Group. In the MsCode program, you can either click Help on the
Toolbar or press function key F1 from any screen.
MsCode's help files give you a snapshot of the MsCode screens and a
full discription on how to use MsCode.
(12) FUNCTION KEYS:
-------------------
F1. Runs the help files.
F2. Displays all test scores.
F3. Erases all test scores.
F4. Ends exercise and displays score (otherwise ends at 100th test word).

own comments to the text. The file also contains the formula for
length of dits, dahs, spacing between characters and words).
SPIN BUTTON CONTROLS:
(There are three spin button controls. One each for the SPACE
MULTIPLIER, WPM and TONE).
See "CONTROLS" in the Help file for instruction on clicking on spin
buttons and labels to change values.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
(13) PROGRAM'S TOOLBAR MENU OPTIONS:
------------------------------------
LESSONS:
There are 27 lessons arranged from least to most difficult so that
the user can progress at a pace that they select. The user can change
the tone, number of words per minute, how many characters are sent at
a time and weather or not the characters are displayed as they are
sent. At the end of each lesson, the user is given a score based on
the level of difficulty for that lesson.
PRACTICE:
PRACTICE is made up of four options:
You can select "HEAR WHAT YOU TYPE" which displays and sends what
ever you type.
Or you can select"TYPE WHAT YOU HEAR" which is the same as LESSONS
except that you are asked to enter a list of characters that you
need practice on. The program randomly sounds out the dits and dahs
for the characters in the practice list. At the end, you are given
a score based on speed, number of characters sent at a time and the
level of difficulty, the same way that the lessons are scored.
Or you can select "PRACTICE KEY" (available only in the registered
version), which allows you to use the Ctrl key as a telegraph key
that not only sounds out the dits and dahs, but displays them and
the characters that the MORSE CODE represent.
Or you can select "SEND TEXT FILE" (available only in the registered
version), which allows you to load a text file and sound out in MORSE
CODE any part of the text file that you have hi-lighted.
WORD TEST:
The user selects one of the 27 word lists that start with short easy
words to copy and graduate to longer harder words to copy. The user is
asked to type the words as the dits and dahs for the characters in the
randomly selected words are sounded out. At the end, the user is given
a score based on speed, number of characters sent at a time and the
level of difficulty the same way that the lessons are scored.
LOGO:
Displays Logo screen that shows telegraph key sounding out the dits
and dahs as "MORSE CODE MADE EASY" is put on the screen in large
letters.
REGISTER:
This option allows you to:
1. Enter your registered name and number.
